A good example of how PIE works in building our team and network is expressed through the practical development of our program in South Africa. Dr Juliana Dahl came to EW, EW harnessed the opportunity of her passion and now she is working in field in Africa in a field relevant to her interests, while advancing EW’s mission. Dr. Juliana Dahl is in South Africa and advancing partnerships in Durban to engage, unite and empower services to prevent Maternal Mortality and increases in orphan population. Through introductions and support of EW community liaison, Courtney White, who had previously volunteered for a year in the region, and EW Public Health Intern, Brooklyn Sparling, Juliana is working with various NGOs and Hospitals for development of longer range programs, including one that helps AIDS affected people find economic sustainability through job training and income generating projects.
Please also see the pictures at the end of the Dr Dahl’s report.
Below is the first Empowerment Works Journal Entry for November 1, through November 21st:
——
Although I landed in Durban, South Africa a little over a month ago, it seems like much longer. The distortion in the perception of time results because there is so much support and help needed here on so many levels. The estimates of the numbers of those living here with HIV/AIDS ranges from 34-44%. It is these sobering statistics and the hope that they might some day shift which puts great urgency into the many daily activities I am called to do to help meet the needs of so many people suffering from AIDS.
