About the Event: As part of our varied efforts to bring awareness and relief to the ongoing genocide in Darfur, GLASDC has united with Stop Genocide Now to present to the Los Angeles community Songs For Darfur featuring live music among beautiful oak trees on the outdoor stage and field. Funds Raised: All funds generated by Songs For Darfur will go to the UNHCR camps Kounoungo and Mile in Chad. Gabriel Stauring of Stop Genocide Now and the Songs For Darfur organizing committee has close ties with these specific camps. Donations will be directed specifically for children’s needs. With Songs For Darfur we hope to began our fundraising for secondary schools in these camps. According to Gabriel, secondary schools would actually save lives because not only does higher education bring hope in an otherwise hopeless environment, but it discourages children from venturing back into Darfur in search of education possibilities. For the younger kids, school supplies, educational toys, and sports materials are needed. They have no books at all. Read more about how the funds will be used. We encourage those interested in helping who cannot attend this event to give what they can. Reputable aid organizations include www.theirc.org, www.oxfam.org, www.doctorswithoutborders.org
