“Mothers Day Radio” Interview with Dr. Suad Sulaiman - EW Sudan Program Director

On a clear and warm summer evening in Venice, CA, a group of high school interns from Mother’s Day Radio, a media justice through social action initiative, conducted a highly anticipated interview with Dr. Suad Sulaiman from Sudan. Each of us, aspiring future doctors, prepared questions for Dr. Sulaiman not knowing what to expect of her. We imagined a tall woman with a strong Sudanese accent that we would have difficulty discerning. However, Dr. Suad is a wise woman who speaks clearly and concretely for all to understand. We were both excited and nervous to meet her. To our surprise, Dr. Suad was just as excited to meet us, and was more than willing to answer all of our questions.

Dr. Suad, a humble and eloquent woman, has been an ecologist for over thirty-seven years. During those years, she studied zoology and chemistry and has trained students who now work in the field. She has traveled to several African countries, and other parts of the world, finding effective vaccines for diseases and helping those in need. Currently, Dr. Suad is focusing on her volunteer efforts and helping to raise awareness and money for sustainable development organizations such as Empowerment Works.

Our questions were answered one by one, leaving each of us with a whole new outlook of the world in which we live. We ended the interview and left with more passion, conviction, and determination to work hard, strive for what we want, and believe in ourselves. From the words of Dr. Suad, “Nothing is too hard. When you are determined, you can do anything.”
